Emma MacDonald UMass Amherst Death, Obituary: Authorities in Massachusetts have charged Jeffrey C. MacDonald, 36, with murder and assault and battery on a police officer following the death of his wife, Emma MacDonald, 31, inside a campus hotel room at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
According to a police report filed in Eastern Hampshire District Court, campus police responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:42 p.m. on Wednesday reporting an emergency at Hotel UMass, located in Room 413. When officers arrived at the scene, MacDonald allegedly assaulted responding officers before they were able to secure the area.
Inside the room, officers discovered Emma MacDonald deceased. Authorities later took Jeffrey MacDonald into custody at the scene. Police said that after being read his rights, he admitted to intentionally killing his wife, stating that he had used his hands, feet, and other objects during the attack with the intent to cause her death.
Following his arrest, MacDonald was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges. A judge ordered him held without bail as the investigation continues. Law enforcement officials have described the case as active and ongoing, with further inquiries being conducted into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a message sent to the campus community, university officials sought to reassure students and staff that there was no continuing danger. The statement, issued by Chancellor Javier Reyes, confirmed that the victim was a staff member at the university and emphasised that safety concerns on campus had been addressed.
MacDonald was employed as a chef at the university. According to reports from The Boston Globe, he had previously been recognised for his professional achievements, including being named Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation.
