William Yi Lu Berkeley CA Obituary, Death: Authorities are investigating a fatal incident at a University of California, Berkeley student housing complex after a student died Tuesday evening at the Unit 3 residence hall area on Durant Avenue.
The University of California Police Department (UCPD) confirmed it responded to reports of a person who had fallen from a building at approximately 7:53 p.m. on April 21, 2026. The Berkeley Fire Department also arrived at the scene shortly after. The individual, later identified as a student, was pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m.
Officials said the Alameda County Medical Examiner & Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death. Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected, and there is currently no known threat to the campus community.
The student was identified on Wednesday as 21-year-old William Yi Lu of Berkeley. The university confirmed that Lu was a junior majoring in Theater & Performance Studies and was expected to graduate in May 2027.
UC Berkeley spokesperson Adam Ratliff said the campus community is deeply saddened by the loss and extended condolences to Lu’s family and friends. He added that details remain limited as the investigation is ongoing and referred additional inquiries to UCPD, citing privacy laws regarding student information.
In a public statement, UCPD confirmed that next of kin has been notified and reiterated that the investigation remains active. University officials also emphasized that counseling and mental health support services are available for students and staff affected by the news.
Support is being provided through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and University Health Services at the Tang Center, including drop-in counseling and after-hours support options for urgent needs. Residence hall-based counseling services have also been made available.
Campus officials encouraged students to seek help if needed and highlighted local and national crisis resources, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Alameda County crisis support services.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
